Are you ready to get back to normal? It is predicted that during the start of 2021-22 academic year, students will be going back to school full-time and all sporting events should be back in full swing.
In addition to improving their athletic skills, student-athletes must maintain a certain GPA to be eligible for conference play and college prep courses. The main problem most student-athletes encounter when they need assistance with their work is that our student-athletes will NOT be able to participate in after school coach classes and assistance programs due to their practice and game schedules.
What Can They Do?
Even with the option of hiring a private tutor or purchasing a developmental program from a large tutoring corporation, the problem of availability and consistency still persist. Many tutors stop their services up to 8 pm, but the average student-athlete conducts their homework between the hours of 7-10 pm during their designated season.
How Does This Affect Athletes?
With lack of academic support, many student-athletes are stressed with the fear of ineligibility, parents are forced to make the decision to pull students from sports so they can focus on their academics, or students will resort to working with inadequate apps that provide quick fixes for homework assignments. However, they will continue to struggle with content during summative assessments due to the lack of understanding.
As a coach or parent, I know that you want your players to compete and be given the opportunity to display their talents on multiple platforms but without support with their academics your players’ dreams will be cut short.
How Can I Help Your Athletes?
My name is Audrey Codner-Gibson and I am a certified Secondary Math teacher and former Athletic Coach and International Professional basketball player who decided to leave the classroom to build a support system for high school student-athletes to assist with their daily math comprehension. I believe that every child can do math with more step-by-step instruction and application using their personal interests.
Students are always seeking reassurance while they are practicing new concepts. If I had a penny for every time a student asked me if this were right before putting their answers on the board, I would be richer than Bill Gates!
But when your athletes finally get home from an away game and sit down to do their assignments, they had forgotten how to do the work which intensifies their levels of stress and leads them to not doing the assignment. This one decision can lead to depression and hopelessness that will ultimately show on and off the field. I know this from past experiences!
My goals are to advance athletes’ content knowledge in math, maintain eligibility, and build confidence on and off the field know they have a support system in place. All of this starts in the classroom.
List of Services
Live online Algebra 1 & 2, Geometry, Precalculus, and Calculus tutoring with a certified High School Math teacher every Monday-Thursday (7-11 pm) and Sundays (4 pm-7:00 pm).
Homework assistance and test prep as well as building math terminology, improving areas of missing foundational skills while working on current assignments.
50-minute sessions that consist of at most 7 students.
Additional practice sheets are available upon request for more practice with certain concepts.
More attention to detail even in a small group setting.
Upgrade to individual tutoring is available upon request.
The Process
Coaches will receive electronic copies of flyers with a QR code which they can post in locker rooms, study hall designated rooms and Athletic Department Offices.
The QR code will lead students to a brief registration form providing details about the particulars needed to better assist them during that session.
Students must submit their request 24 hours prior to the session. Last-minute requests, based on availability, can be submitted until 11 am EST the day of a Monday-Thursday session.
Sunday sessions must be registered by 11 pm Saturday night.
This service is on a First Come, First Serve basis.
Once the registration and payment process are completed, students will receive an email message with a Zoom Meeting Number and password. *Passwords will be changed daily to lessen unnecessary disruptions.
They are not encouraged to share this information with their peers (but we all know how that goes).
At every session, students must have everything they need ready to go (fully charged laptop/phone, paper for additional notes, pencil/pen, calculator, and a “get-it-done” attitude).
Each session will be recorded in case of any disciplinary issues ONLY (see Privacy Policy and Terms and Conditions).
NOTE: Both parents and HS athletes must understand that this service is designed to help build their confidence in math and make real-world connections through questioning and life examples. Student-athletes are still required to study for assessments and complete homework assignments on their own accord.
Cancellation Policy: Cancellations must occur 12 hours prior to your designated time period to avoid payment, and any no-shows due to sports-related injuries will require proof of medical treatment (i.e., doctor's note) to receive a full refund.
How Much? The cost is $53 per session (Monday-Thursday) and $58 (Sundays). Each spot is reserved for single participants only. If more than one person is present during the session, the tutor will reject them off the call and the funds will NOT be refunded. If you do have multiples in one household, please contact me for more information PRIOR to registration.
How Does This Sound? I want to help your student-athletes excel in and out of the classroom. If you or someone you know can benefit from my service and would like to learn more about me, please go to my solo.to/audreycodnergibson account and arrange for a Meet and Greet. I am willing to come to your Coaches and Parents’ meetings to talk about my services and how they can benefit your programs. Contact Audrey Codner-Gibson for more information.
Thank you for your time and attention. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Sincerely and Respectfully, Audrey Codner-Gibson, MAT
